Celebrating Small Christian Communities
Ngong-Communication Office| October 29th, 2025
It is a great privilege to belong to a Small Christian Community and an even greater honor to lead one. Leadership in the Small Christian Community is not about status but about guiding God’s people towards holiness.
Small Christian Communities have their biblical origin in the early Christian Church. In Acts of the Apostles 2: 42-47, we read about the spiritual life of the early Church: In 1973, the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) prioritised the formation of Small Christian Communities in our region. It is now over 50 years, and these communities have enabled Christians live a communal life and keep to their baptismal promises.
The Diocese of Ngong, through the Small Christian Community office on 25th October, held Mass at St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral, Ngong, for Small Christian Communities leaders at Diocesan level. It is the first time Mass of this kind is held and which according to the Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator Fr. Boniface Mukwe will be held annually to spur leadership and growth of Small Christian Communities. As Hebrews 10:24–25 reminds us: “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together... but encouraging one another.”
Bishop John Oballa reflection as He presided over the function focused on the pillars of a vibrant Small Christian Community. He said that every SCC must be grounded in Scripture. Members ought to be acquainted with the Seven Steps without skipping any, ensuring that each person can lead the community in prayer and discussion. He stressed that the goal is not merely to read the Word but to experience its transforming power in our daily lives.
The Bishop asked leaders to strengthen their communities in matters charity and sharing. He said, “If every SCC truly shared its resources, the work of charitable organizations such as the St. Vincent de Paul Society would be much lighter. True Christian living is marked by generosity, compassion, and service.”
He called leaders to cconduct themselves in such a way that SCC members will look forward to participating actively in the SCC gatherings. He called them to be a source of encouragement to others in their walk with God.
“Encourage your brothers and sisters to grow spiritually in faith, perseverance and hope during trials. Some members grow heavy feet because of money collections through the SCC. Others skip meetings because they have nothing to cook. Encourage them and help them understand that SCC are not about food and drink, but sharing of God's Word and evangelizing each Family with all the joys and challenges that are brought into prayer.”
